Career confusion in your twenties

Are you twenty something and not sure what the hell you want to do for a career? Maybe with your life?

Don’t worry, me too.

You’re not on your own, despite what the instagram stories may tell you.

During your school years you are expected to decided a lot. Before you know it because you took a certain class in year nine you’ve ended up a law student with a passion for writing erotic novels or like I did, a beauty therapist with a passion for something new every week.

The soul searching can feel hopeless when you feel like you haven’t got a calling. Some individuals seem lucky. That girl at school that’s going to be a vet and knew from the get go or that boy who was destined to end up on Broadway.

They were lucky to realise their passion early, yay for them! But don’t despair – this is a rare occurance.

You’re not always going to have a big, mountain shifting moment when you realise your purpose although it usually pans out that way in books. I’m not even sure if we are born into this world with a specific calling.

Avocado’s were destined to be a millennials toast topping but they didn’t know that when they started out now did they?

Moving away from the thought that there was only one thing I was suppose to do really helped ease the pressure. I can now see a career is made up of tiny fibers, created and shaped by moments in our lives that are woven together to make one beautiful tapestry that your mum would be proud of, if no one else.

Let’s face it. You didn’t save that bird as a child and realise you must help small creatures for the forseable, and that’s not a bad thing (although it was for the bird I guess).

Not having a calling is actually a super power.

Not being adimate in certain career from the get go gives you the freedom to do whatever the bloody hell you like. Yes you can do that anyway, even if you know, but this way you’re not letting go of a career dream because well, you didn’t have one.

I mean that in the nicest way possible.

Please don’t panic if you’re still not sure, neither am I and it doesn’t matter. Some how I didn’t realise I loved writing and photography until two years ago and I’ve got dreams for the future. Not all huge, some completely different than others and most are things I’d never have thought about trying when I was younger.

J K Rowling didn’t publish her first book till she was in her thirties, Vera Wang didn’t enter the fashion world until she was forty and had several careers before that and they did pretty well…

We live a lot longer than we used to and it’s not surprising that some are not satisfied doing one thing for the duration. Most of us have the freedom to change our minds whenever we see fit and we’re lucky for that so exercise that muscle when you wish.

Keep gravitating towards things you love and please don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Celebrate in your successes, what you’re doing right now is enough and don’t you forget it.

Create and participate in things that give you joy, because a career should bring you just that and it’s not a one size fits all subject.

Lots of love,

K x

Ahhh I am loving this post Kirst! First off, that avocado line is so accurate and hilaaarious! I totally agree with the post – I always say this to my students. I’m 26, nearing 27 and I don’t have a clue what I want to do or where my path will lead. I think they look at me as if to say erm..yes you do know, you’re in a job now… but lets face it it isnt a job for life ha! Such a good post as always xxxx
